The Public Security Police (PSP) nabbed a woman from the Chinese mainland for stealing 60 items worth 3,000 patacas from four local shops on Sunday, PSP spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Wong identified the suspect as a jobless woman in her twenties, surnamed Wu.

According to Wong, at around 4:30 p.m. that day, the Public Security Police received a report from the owner of a stationery shop on Rua de Tai Lin in Taipa, saying that while taking inventory, they discovered that several items had been stolen. The loss amounted to 11 items with a total value of around 270 patacas, Wong said.

Based on the store’s surveillance footage and the city’s CCTV footage, according to Wong, PSP officers identified Wu as the suspected shoplifter and tracked her whereabouts, intercepting her in a hotel lobby in Taipa at around 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Wu admitted to the theft, Wong said, adding that during a search of her hotel guestroom, police seized 60 items. After sorting and identifying the goods, it was confirmed that they had been stolen from four shops in the city, including the stationers on Rua de Tai Lin, Wong said, adding that the total value of the stolen goods amounted to around 3,000 patacas.

Additionally, Wong pointed out, the suspect’s loot included eight items that could not be traced to any shop.

Wu has meanwhile been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge.
