The Fuhong Society of Macau (澳門扶康會) said in a statement on Monday that it will host a market in Iao Hon park this Saturday to mark National Disability Day*.
Fuhong (which means “assistance for health and well-being”) is a non-profit social service organisation. It provides services and support – especially for people with intellectual disabilities and persons with mental illness, including rehabilitation and community-integration support measures.
According to the statement, 2026 also marks the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations’ “Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities”.
According to Wikipedia, the text was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 13, 2006, opened for signature on March 30, 2007, and came into force on May 3, 2008.
Fuhong hopes that through the market they can not only commemorate this special day, but also bring together resources from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and community efforts to promote the equal participation of persons with disabilities in social life, enabling them to live fulfilling lives, the statement said.
The market brings together social service organisations, community groups, schools and businesses from across the GBA, aiming to demonstrate the 11-city conurbation’s collective strength in advancing the cause of disability inclusion, the statement said.
The statement noted that the one-day market will feature charity sale booths, a health-testing zone, art workshops, stage performances, and several thematic talks.
The market is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. this Saturday.
*In the Chinese mainland, National Disability Day, officially known as the National Day for Assisting Disabled Persons, is observed annually on the third Sunday of May.
