Three influenza-like illness clusters were reported to the Health Bureau (SSM) on Wednesday, altogether involving 19 students.
According to a statement by the bureau that day, the first case involves seven Form 3 students (four males, three females) from Hou Kong Middle School on Estrada de Ferreira do Amaral (亞馬喇馬路); six (four males, 2 females) Primary 1 students from The Affiliated Primary School of Lou Hau High School on Estrada do Repouso (鏡湖馬路); and six (three males, three females) Form 4B students from Lingnan Middle School on Estrada dos Parses (松山白頭馬路).
The statement noted that starting from April 9, patients started showing respiratory symptoms such as fever and cough, with some seeking medical attention. The statement said that among them, one student from the Affiliated Primary School of Lou Hau High School required hospitalisation and was in stable condition yesterday.
The statement said that the remaining patients have mild symptoms with no reports of severe cases or serious complications. The statement said that upon investigation and rapid respiratory testing, one tested positive for Influenza A and 14 tested positive for Influenza B.
The schools involved have “strengthened infection control measures, including enhanced cleaning, disinfection, and maintaining indoor air circulation, and are strictly enforcing isolation protocols for the ill students”, according to the statement.
The statement reminded that the 2025-2026 seasonal influenza vaccine provides protection against current Influenza A and B strains, being “the most effective measure to prevent infection and reduce the risk of severe illness or death”. The statement strongly encouraged vaccination among those who have not had their jab since September last year.
