Macao SAR Secretary for Economy and Finance Anton Tai quits ‘for personal reasons’

    Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Secretary for Economy and Finance Anton Tai Kin Ip issued a statement this morning regarding his resignation from the position.

The full text of his resignation request was released by the local government this morning: 

“I, Tai Kin Ip, formally requested resignation from the position of Secretary for Economy and Finance of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region from Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai some time ago for personal reasons. Today, the State Council, acting on the proposal of the Chief Executive, published my removal from the office.

I express my heartfelt gratitude to the Central People's Government and Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai for the trust and support they provided during my tenure as Secretary for Economy and Finance of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region. I also wish to express my thanks to all public service employees in the economic and financial sectors for their hard work and collaboration. I will continue, as always, to pay attention to, collaborate with, and support the Chief Executive and the MSAR Government in governing according to the law and toward the overall development of the MSAR”.

According to previously published information, Tai, born in Macau in June 1968, held the position of Secretary for Economy and Finance since December 2024. He was one of the MSAR government’s five portfolio secretaries assisting the Chief Executive in overseeing and implementing policy decisions. He obtained a Bachelor of Economics degree from the Catholic University of Portugal in Lisbon and a Master of Government Studies degree from the University of Saint Joseph (formerly the Macau Inter-University Institute). He became a career civil servant in 1995 when he joined the Economic Services Bureau (DSE). He served as the director of the Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT) from April 2016 until his appointment as one of this local government’s five portfolio secretary assisting the chief secretary in December 2024.
