In view of the continued deterioration of the situation in the Middle East, the local government has issued a Level 1 travel alert for Bahrain, Jordan, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, according to a statement by the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) yesterday.

The statement urged residents to avoid visiting Iran and Israel (Level 3), while locals currently in both countries should step up vigilance and leave both countries as soon as possible,

According to the MGTO’s travel alert system, there are three levels – Level 3 is the highest risk category. Currently, the system covers 110 countries and travel destinations. For more information about the system, please visit the webpage: https://www.dst.gov.mo/en/tourism-crisis-management/tourism-crisis-management-travel-alert.html.

The statement advised residents who plan to visit Iraq, Kuwait and Yemen (excluding the other 110 countries in the system) or are currently there to stay vigilant and contact the Chinese embassies in the three countries or the Global Emergency Call Centre for Consular Protection on +86 10 12308 or 24-hour tourism hotline +853 2833 3000 in case of emergency.

Residents who are currently in the countries or regions in the Middle East are urged to step up vigilance and pay close attention to the latest statements by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.

The statement pointed out that airports in the Middle East and the aviation networks in Europe remain affected.

MGTO also advised residents to stay tuned for flight-schedule rearrangements and to stay in touch with the airlines with which they booked their flights.

As of Monday, 18 enquiries or assistance requests regarding the Middle East had been received via the MGTO hotline this month, nearly 80 percent of which involved Macau residents being stranded Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Dubai, as well as Macau residents who reported their presence in the Middle East, among other issues.

About 20 percent of enquiries concerned refunds and cancellations for tour groups that did not go ahead as scheduled, the statement said, adding that MGTO will continue to monitor and follow up on the situation.
