Aiming to safeguard public health and reduce smoking while walking, a pilot “smoking-free zone” will be implemented around Dr. Carlos d’Assumpção Park’s (宋玉生公園) streets, pavements and open spaces in Nape starting on Thursday, according to a statement issued by the Health Bureau (SSM) yesterday.
During the pilot period, smoking will be prohibited throughout the “Smoke-Free Zone” except within the “Designated Smoking Spots”. Health Bureau (SSM) inspectors will conduct irregular on-the-spot checks, the statement said.
The statement noted that smokers found outside the designated smoking spots will be admonished but not fined during this trial phase. Further details will be announced later.
Starting last Friday, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) began painting the ground boundaries and markings for the “Smoke-Free Zone” and “Designated Smoking Spots”, the statement said, adding that the official trial operation is set to begin on Thursday.
The Health Bureau urged smokers to quit for the sake of their own and their families’ health. Those intending to quit smoking can seek a referral to the SSM “Smoking Cessation Consultation Clinic” through a health centre or the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre (CHCSJ), make appointment via the “My Health” section within the “One Account” app, or call 2848 1238 during office hours to schedule a consultation.
