The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement on Saturday that it was investigating and following up on a case involving an erroneous signboard about ongoing maintenance work at a public sports ground, a picture of which was widely circulated on social media on Saturday.
The Chinese wording on the notice board mistakenly wrote “quiet entry” (靜止進入), instead of “prohibited entry” (禁止進入). According to the Putonghua (Mandarin) input method (IME), the “靜” is jing, and “禁” is jin, the similarity of the two words in pinyin may have caused the mistake.
The Portuguese wording was also wrong by erroneously misspelling the word “entrar” (“to enter”) as “entr ar”.
The sign containing the errors was posted at the ongoing renovation project of the public sports ground on Rua Central da Areia Preta (黑沙環中街). The engineering contractor admitted to producing and erecting the sign without verification by the Municipal Affairs Bureau, the statement said, adding that upon learning of the incident, the bureau immediately ordered its engineering unit to rectify and correct the sign.
The statement underscored that the fencing in of construction sites, as well as the posting of signs must be strictly implemented in accordance with the respective requirements.
The statement added that the Municipal Affairs Bureau will fine the company responsible for the mistake in accordance with its engineering contract and strengthen inspections at all construction areas.
