Macau police log over 14,600 traffic accidents in 2025, down 5.6 pct

The Public Security Police (PSP) announced in a statement on Friday their Traffic Police Department recorded 14,638 traffic accidents last year, representing a decrease of 5.63 percent from the 15,510 accidents recorded in 2024. On average 40.1 traffic accidents were recorded per day last year, against 42.4 accidents per day in 2024. 

According to the statement, the top three primary causes of traffic accidents were failure to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, failure to control speed, and careless steering, which recorded 3,087 cases, 2,024 cases and 1,892 cases respectively. 

The statement noted that a total of 4,578 injuries resulting from traffic accidents were recorded last year, representing a 0.68 percent increase compared to the 4,547 cases recorded throughout 2024, when there were four fatal traffic accidents, resulting in seven deaths, two more fatalities compared to the five deaths recorded in 2024.

In 2025, the statement noted, the Public Security Police continued to conduct enforcement operations targeting pedestrians jaywalking across all districts of Macau, resulting in the prosecution of 7,651 cases of pedestrian violations, adding that the reported record number represents a 2.56 percent increase compared to the 7,460 cases recorded throughout 2024.

Throughout the previous year, the statement pointed out, there were 141 cases of drunk-driving offences, representing a decrease of 17.06 percent compared to the 170 cases recorded for the whole of 2024. Driving under the influence of drugs accounted for three cases, an increase of 50 percent compared to two cases in 2024, the statement said.

In promoting traffic safety initiatives, the PSP’s Traffic Department organised 128 road safety seminars last year, attracting 12,218 participants. The participation record represents increases of 3.23 percent in the number of seminars and 7.06 percent in attendance compared to the 124 seminars and 11,412 participants recorded in 2024. 

In order to reduce the occurrence of traffic accidents, the Public Security Police urged drivers and riders as well as members of the public in general to pay close attention to road and weather conditions when on the road, and comply with the instructions of traffic signs.
