The University of Macau (UM) announced in a Wednesday statement that it hosted its first Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Immunity and Disease Summit last month, bringing together leading experts from across the region to explore new frontiers in immunology and human health.

Held under the theme “Immunity and Human Health: New Frontiers”, the summit provided a high-level platform for academic exchange on basic immunology research, the prevention and control of immune-related diseases, as well as immunotherapy and health promotion, the statement said.

According to the statement, the event gathered scholars, researchers and industry representatives from the Greater Bay Area, fostering cross-institutional dialogue and collaboration.

The summit was jointly organised by the Molecular Immunology Division of the Chinese Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (CSBMB), the public university’s Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS), and the School of Medicine at Jinan University in Guangzhou, the statement said.

Chen Dong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and a leading immunologist, delivered a keynote speech in which he spoke about the latest international breakthroughs and future trends in immunology, the statement noted.

The statement added that participants also engaged in in-depth discussions on topics including immunity assessment, immune regulation mechanisms, cell therapy, and immune health management.

Speaking at the summit, Deng Chuxia, dean of the UM Faculty of Health Sciences, said the theme “reflects the forefront of scientific research” and offers “significant value for fundamental studies” while remaining closely aligned with global public health challenges and the future development of precision medicine, the statement noted.

He added that research into the immunomodulatory mechanisms of Chinese medicine is a key focus of ICMS, and that the summit has injected fresh momentum into strengthening Macau’s academic capacity in immunology and Chinese medicine.
