The “2025 International Symposium on Standardisation-Enabled Innovation in Artificial Intelligence and the Low-Altitude Economy” was held yesterday, with the aim of driving the standardisation of the low altitude economy (LAE)* into a new phase characterised by institutionalisation, platformisation, and internationalisation, according to a statement by the organisers.

The one-day seminar took place at the private Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Taipa. It focused on the innovative development of the low altitude economy industry and the empowerment of international standards, the statement pointed out, adding that around 100 experts and scholars from government departments, universities, enterprises, research institutions, and others attended.

MUST Vice-Chancellor Joseph Lee Hun Wei said in a speech he expected the seminar to further strengthen Macau’s voice in the formulation of international low-altitude standards and contribute to collaborative innovation in the industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

Lee added that the Chinese mainland has been a leader in the low altitude economy development in recent years, an emerging sector tapping into the underutilised airspace below 1,000 metres, with general aviation in its cornerstone, and encompassing a wide range of areas, including low altitude flights, aviation tourism, and regional passenger transportation.

In recent years, the Chinese mainland has introduced a series of supportive policies and strategic plans related to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), smart manufacturing, and the digital economy, laying a solid foundation for the rapid development of industries associated with low-altitude applications, Lee added.

Lee also said the purpose of the seminar, themed “International Standards as an Enabler”, was to highlight that standards serve as the cornerstone for technology promotion and industrial collaboration, facilitate mutual recognition of related products, enhance regulatory efficiency, reduce market access barriers, and scale integration of artificial intelligence and the low-altitude economy across various fields and regions.

Lee noted that MUST remains committed to addressing national strategic needs and deepening research in the interdisciplinary field of low altitude economy and artificial intelligence (AI).

Apart from MUST, the seminar was co-organised by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Standard Innovation Alliance and the Macau Association for Low-Altitude Airspace Economy.

* The Low-Altitude Economy (LAE) refers to the comprehensive economic ecosystem centred around activities, services, and industries conducted in the airspace near the ground. It’s primarily driven by advances in electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, drones (UAVs), and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). - DeepSeek
