A new exhibition by Portuguese professional photographer Pedro Ramos titled “Macau’s Reflections – Now and Then” – opened last night at the Portuguese Bookshop on Rua de São Domingos (板樟堂街), showcasing photos from a key moment in the city’s history to its present day.
Located in the basement gallery of the bookshop, the exhibition has been organised by the Macau-based 10 Marias Cultural Association, with the works on display until December 30.
Upon entering the exhibition, gallerygoers will immediately be met by a wall of moments from the city’s past and its return to the motherland in 1999. Through Ramos’ lens, exhibitiongoers will find photos of Macau’s architecture, markets, street life and cultural traditions, as well as photos of the present including Macau’s modern architecture and integrated resorts. A statement provided by the organiser described the photos as being both a portal to the past and a colourful future, with Ramos providing a reflection and view of the city.
Ramos has a personal connection to the city, having grown up in Macau where he completed his primary and secondary education at the Liceu de Macau (澳門利宵中學), which was a Portuguese-curriculum public secondary school. He has had a career in photography since 1998, covering commercial, portrait, fashion, architectural, and travel photography. He is now based in Portugal, according to the statement.
The statement pointed out that Ramos has had collaborations with entities such as Canon Portugal, FNAC Portugal (a well-known chain of bookshops), and the Oeste Tourism Board, as well as ongoing work as a photography instructor in institutions such as the Social Services of Caixa Geral de Depósitos. Stay tuned for more pictures and an interview with Ramos in an upcoming page 4.
One may view the images on display at the gallery from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Admission is free.
