The Public Security Police (PSP) apprehended a man from the Chinese mainland on Saturday for theft by finding, PSP spokesman Wong Chi Weng said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Wong identified the suspect as a male in his forties surnamed Yang who claimed to be jobless.
According to Wong, the Public Security Police (PSP) received a report on November 17 from a citizen who said that she had lost her electronic watch while packing her belongings in front of the Barrier Gate checkpoint on November 16. The following morning, the owner used a mobile application to track the watch’s location and discovered that it had been moving around various locations. Suspecting that someone had stolen it, she immediately reported the case to the police.
Through their citywide CCTV surveillance footage, the police identified Yang as the suspect and apprehended him on Saturday in the northern district. Under questioning, Yang admitted to stealing the watch out of greed and claimed that he had given it to a female friend. Wong said that his friend claimed to have been unaware of how the watch was obtained and has thereafter returned it to the police.
Wong added that Yang was sharing an illegal inn in the northern district with another mainland man, with bedspacers paying HK$150 per day or HK$700 per month. The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) later confirmed that the residential flat provided illegal accommodation and therefore sealed it off, pending the outcome of an investigation.
Yang has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of theft by finding.
