The private University of Saint Joseph (USJ) is calling for submissions for its photography and art contest entitled “Green Shields: Nature’s Defence for Our Future”, inviting members of the public to send in their works until October 30.

The competition is themed “Green Shields for a Resilient and Sustainable City”, tackling how nature can protect a community, along with how green infrastructure can help a city adapt to climate change. It features a school and an open category, with each having five suggested sub-themes.

According to a statement on the Catholic university’s website, the school category’s five subthemes are “My City’s Green Shield”, “Nature Saves the Day”, “My Dream Green City”, “Coastal Guardians” and “Greener Schools, Stronger Cities”, asking students to show everything from how nature protects people from floods, heat or pollution to how green infrastructures or gardens in schools are part of a city’s resilience.

In the Open Category, the subthemes are “Nature-Based Solutions in Action”, “Coexistence: Nature and the City”, “Green Shields of the Future”, “Resilience in the Wild” and “Hidden Green Heroes”, highlighting everything from real-world examples of green infrastructure to lesser-known green elements in Macau that contribute to resilience, the statement said.

Detailed descriptions of each of the suggested subthemes can be found on the website, where registration forms can also be found.

Winners have a chance to get cash prizes and certificates, with a top prize of 1,000 patacas up for grabs. There are also special awards and five honourable mentions, the statement said.

The website noted that works focusing on the Greater Bay Area (GBA) are encouraged and will be prioritized. One can find more details on https://www.usj.edu.mo/en/
