Seven female artists of foreign educational backgrounds are using art to explore themes of self-expression in their daily lives as women and also re-examine different aspects of life in an exhibition titled “A Speakable Position for WOMEN (我們)” at Pátio do Espinho.

On until October 31, the exhibition is part of Art Macao’s “Local Curatorial Project” and showcases works by artists Ho Pui San, Io Weng Si, Leong Kitman, Li Jia Bao, Luo Ai Ying, Ng Man Wai and Situ Jian.

The pieces were created through different mediums including mixed media, video, installations and mineral pigments on xuan paper (rice paper). They are displayed at Na Tcha House and near the Old Well of Pátio do Espinho, taking exhibitiongoers for a stroll along the historical courtyard, which is known as Chi Lam Vai (茨林圍) in Cantonese.

The artists use the space with their “transnational and diasporic experiences”, according to a statement provided by the organisers to the Post recently. “Through a distinctly feminine lens, the works raise urgent questions about contemporary notions of belonging, migration, motherhood, and displacement”, the statement added.

The exhibition also reflects on aspects such as the fluidity of our body/identity and the limited creative conditions for housewives and also aims to provide an experience that puts together place, history, culture and female memory, according to the statement.

The works are showcased until October 31. One can visit the exhibition venues from Tuesdays to Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is closed on Mondays.

*“Pátio do Espinho is a 400-year-old, formerly walled village that lies just a street away from the UNESCO World Heritage-protected Na Tcha Temple, one of Macau’s two temples dedicated to the divinity known in Putonghua as Nezha. It is also close to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ruins of St Paul’s,” according to an article by Post reporter Armindo Neves, headlined “‘Rainy Moment’ portrays Chi Lam Vai’s struggling identity within Macau’s urban fabric”, published on September 9
