The Macau Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT) announced during a press conference at the General Post Office (GPO) yesterday that it will issue two sets of stamps, one tomorrow and the other on September 15.

The two sets of stamps are named “80th Anniversary of Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War” and “Bicentenary of George Chinnery’s Arrival in Macao”, respectively.

During the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, Macau’s then Portuguese administration maintained neutrality in the conflict, even though most residents, deep in their hearts, backed China’s struggle for survival against the Japanese invaders, according to contemporary witness reports. While Hong Kong was occupied by the Japanese in 1941, they imposed indirect control over Macau through naval blockades and economic pressure between 1943 and 1945, historians have pointed out.

According to a CTT statement, George Chinnery (1774–1852) is one of the most significant and prolific foreign artists to have worked in Asia during the 19th century. He is best known for his decades in Macau and Guangzhou, where he created a vast collection of paintings and sketches that form an invaluable historical record of the Pearl River Delta and its people before the advent of photography, the statement said.

The statement also said that the “80th Anniversary of Victory Over Japanese Aggression, Fascism”, which will be marked by a grand parade in Beijing tomorrow, will be commemorated with a set of two stamps, priced at 6.50 patacas, while the first-day cover with stamps will be available for 12.50 patacas. The price of a stamp information sheet is 14.50 patacas.

The “Bicentenary of George Chinnery’s Arrival in Macao” set of four stamps to be issued on September 15 is priced at 17 patacas. The first-day cover with stamps is available for 23 patacas, while the first-day cover with a souvenir sheet is priced at 20 patacas. The set will include an informational leaflet, complete with the four stamps, costing 25 patacas, while the version with a souvenir sheet and information sheet is priced at 22 patacas in total, the statement said.

CTT President Derby Lau Wai Meng said during the press conference that, in celebration of next Wednesday’s Teacher’s Day, a temporary post counter for free commemorative postmarks will be set up at the Philatelic Shop of the General Post Office on Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro.

In order to commemorate the “Philakorea 2025 World Stamp Exhibition”, slated to be held in the South Korean capital Seoul between September 17 and 21, the local post office will issue a special souvenir cover. Additionally, a commemorative postmark cancellation service will be provided at the exhibition venue. Each stamp is priced at 7.50 patacas.
