A man from the mainland was apprehended on Sunday for fraud, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chao Teng Hin said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Chao identified the suspect as a 30-year-old male surnamed Chen, who claimed to be jobless.
According to Chao, the police received a report on Saturday from a young man from the mainland who said that he had been defrauded out of HK$112,000 (115,870 patacas) at a casino in Cotai. Chao said that the victim met Chen on July 21 at the casino and they gambled together. By around 4 a.m. that same day, the victim had won HK$112,000 in chips. Chen then offered to assist the victim to transfer the funds to his mainland bank account. The victim trusted Chen and handed over all his chips, after which they both left. Chao added that Chen had immediately left Macau after defrauding the victim.
Chao noted that the victim never received any funds, and that Chen repeatedly delayed the repayment, coming up with various excuses. Finally realising that Chen had deceived him, the victim reported the case to the police on Saturday.
The police identified Chen as the suspect and intercepted him on Sunday at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge checkpoint when he was leaving Macau.
Under questioning, Chen refused to cooperate. The police seized a mobile phone from him.
Chen has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge.
