A man from the mainland was arrested on Thursday for stealing a box of ‘baijiu’ from outside a shop, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lei Chan Hong said during a regular press conference yesterday.

“Baijiu” is also known in English as “Chinese white liquor”.

Lei identified the suspect as a male in his forties, surnamed Wang, who told the police that he’s jobless.

According to Lei, the police received a report on August 16 from the staff member of a shop in the northern district. The staff told the police that among several boxes of the liquor placed outside the shop one was later discovered to have vanished. Suspecting the box of ‘baijiu’ to have been stolen, the staff reported a total loss of 13,600 patacas to the police immediately.

Using their citywide CCTV surveillance, the police identified Wang as the suspect and apprehended him at the Barrier Gate checkpoint on Thursday.

The police later discovered that Wang had sold the stolen box of ‘baijiu’ to a shop in Zape, where police recovered 12 bottles of the liquor. Under questioning, Wang denied the crime.

Lei did not reveal the liquor’s brand.

Wang has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge.
