Integrated resort operator Wynn is this year presenting a mooncake gift set for the Mid-Autumn Festival showcasing the art of Chinese and Portuguese porcelain designed in collaboration with young local ceramic artist Aki Cheong.

According to a Tuesday statement, the collaboration also complements the first “Wynn Culture” flagship project “Hello China, Hello Macao – The Odyssey of Jingdezhen Porcelain: A Heritage Voyage from Macao to the World”, a Special Exhibition in this year’s Art Macao.

Regarding the design, the statement said that the Chinese Mid-Autumn lantern-shaped mooncake gift bag blends Chinese blue-and-white porcelain and Portuguese Azulejo ceramic tiles.

Azulejo (which in Arabic means “polished stone”) refers to a form of Portuguese and Spanish painted, tin-glazed, ceramic tilework. They are not merely functional tiles but a quintessential art form that has become a defining feature of the architecture and cultural heritage of the Iberian Peninsula, particularly in Portugal.

The front of the bag features Chinese doucai “lotus scrolls” painted in “imperial colours”, while the back depicts “the beauty of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain”, according to the statement.

The term doucai (斗彩) refers to a highly esteemed and complex technique in Chinese porcelain decoration, particularly from the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The statement noted that the sides are auspicious motifs like “ruyi” patterns and plantain leaves, symbolising success and prosperity in one’s career.

The mooncake gift box design and the Jingdezhen-made porcelain vase-shaped bag charm are inspired by the Buccleuch Vases from the Wynn Art Collection. Wynn acquired the vases in 2011, the statement said.

The statement added that the integrated resort operator has again partnered with October Fifth Bakery, with two gift sets available: the “Wynn Tea Classic Mooncakes” gift set at 468 patacas containing six Osmanthus Oolong mooncakes or the “Wynn Signature Mooncakes” gift set priced at 498 patacas and featuring six Osmanthus Oolong tea, Lava Pineapple, and Lava Mandarin Peel flavours.
