Macau Customs busts 7 smuggling cases in 10 days

The Macau Customs Services announced in a statement on Sunday that it busted seven smuggling cases between August 6 and 15.

According to the statement, customs officers seized a total of 81 used electronic devices, 51 used mobile phones, nine cosmetic products, a bottle of Chinese white liquor (白酒), and 254.55 grams of recycled electronic chips.

In the statement, customs said the seven smugglers are aged between 17 and 73 years, comprising mainlanders and locals.

On August 6, customs officers at the Macau-Zhuhai Qingmao pedestrian checkpoint noticed a woman exhibiting an abnormally stiff gait. An inspection revealed 45 used mobile phones wrapped around her thighs.

On August 7, customs officers at the Barrier Gate checkpoint noticed a woman and a man exhibiting nervous behaviour. An inspection revealed 10 used mobile phones and six used mobile phones respectively to be smuggled into the mainland.

Last Tuesday, customs officers at the Barrier Gate checkpoint noticed a woman with a bulging waist. An inspection revealed 20 used electronic devices, nine cosmetic products and a bottle of Chinese white liquor wrapped around her abdomen, to be smuggled into the mainland.

Last Wednesday, customs officers at the Barrier Gate checkpoint noticed a man exhibiting suspicious behaviour. An inspection revealed 23 used mobile phones in his trouser pockets and a sling bag, to be smuggled into the mainland.

Last Thursday, customs officers at the Barrier Gate checkpoint noticed a man exhibiting an abnormally stiff gait. An inspection revealed 16 used electronic devices and eight used mobile phones wrapped around is lower abdomen, close to his private parts, to be smuggled into the mainland.

Last Friday, customs officers at the Barrier Gate checkpoint noticed a man exhibiting suspicious behaviour. An inspection revealed four used mobile phones and 254.55 grams of recycled electronic chips wrapped around his abdomen, to be smuggled into the mainland.

According to Macau’s External Trade Law, the seven smugglers face a maximum fine of 50,000 patacas each, while the seized contraband has been confiscated.
