A woman from the mainland was arrested on Tuesday for theft by finding after stealing a paper bag containing an item of clothing valued at 1,690 patacas that had been left on a bench, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Kong Chi Ian said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Kong identified the suspect as a female in her fifties surnamed Xie who claimed to be jobless.

According to Kong, the Public Security Police (PSP) received a report on Monday from a young mainland woman who said that she had left a paper bag containing an item of clothing, worth 1,690 patacas, on a bench in Rua do Cunha (官也街) in Taipa where she had been sitting. When she returned to look for the bag, it had vanished. Suspecting that someone had taken it, she immediately reported the case to the police.

Kong noted that through citywide CCTV surveillance footage, the police identified Xie as the suspect and arrested her on Tuesday in a hotel in Cotai. The police later recovered the clothing from Xie’s guestroom.

Under questioning, Xie admitted to having picked up the paper bag after sitting on the bench.

Xie has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of theft by finding.
