Macau’s population dropped by 1,100 year on year to 685,900 at the end of the first half of this year, partially due to a decrease in the number of non-resident workers (NRWs) living in Macau, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

According to a DSEC statement on Tuesday, females accounted for 53.9 percent of Macau’s population at the end of the second quarter.

In the first half of this year, the number of live births decreased by 289 year on year to 1,421, while mortality dropped by 21 year on year to 1,247. The top three underlying causes of death were neoplasms (aka tumours) (475), diseases of the circulatory system (337), and diseases of the respiratory system (134), the statement said.

The statement also said that marriage registrations decreased by 220 year on year to 1,442 in the first half of this year.

As regards population movement, the statement said, the number of new arrivals from mainland China with one-way permits increased by 45 year on year to 1,616 in the first half of this year, while the number of individuals newly granted the right of abode rose by 424 year on year to 895.

Based on Macau’s total land area of 33.3 square kilometres, its population density amounted to 20,598 inhabitants per square kilometre at the end of the first half of this year, one of the world’s highest.

Thanks to large-scale land reclamation projects, Macau’s land area has risen by 39.9 percent since December 1999, when the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) was established by the People’s Republic of China (PRC). At the end of 1999, Macau’s land area amounted to 23.8 square kilometres, according to official statistics.

Since December 1999, when Macau’s population stood at 429,600, its population has risen by 59.7 percent, according to official demographics.
