A video installation along with paintings created by Kyoto-based local contemporary artist Season Lao (劉善恆) are being showcased at Creative Macau in Nape until next Tuesday.
The exhibition’s theme is intentionally left unnamed, according to a recent Creative Macau statement, and manifests “a silent dialogue between the artist and the natural world”.
Aside from a video installation and performance that lasts nearly four-minutes, exhibitiongoers will find various paintings showcased around the gallery, presenting images that one might make out to be mountains and clouds.
The statement said that Lao’s work is born partly from chance. “The artist does not control everything and the unpredictable ‘blank space’ (留白) plays an important role in the work. Thus, there is no fixed meaning in such a process, and the mind is left open to the ‘blank space’ (留白) or the ‘space of emergence’ (餘地) that arises through the encounter with the viewer and nature, reflecting the essence of co-emergence (緣起)”, according to the statement.
Lao, 38, graduated from the Macao Polytechnic Institute (nowadays Macao Polytechnic University or MPU) in 2010. Prior to being based in Kyoto, he resided in Hokkaido from 2010 to 2020, according to the artist’s website. He created site specific works during the COVID-19 pandemic and has collections of his work displayed in places such as France, Japan, and Macau.
His website notes that his installations aim to “dissolve the boundary between subject and object, re-exploring the relationship between human nature and the external world”
One can visit the exhibition on the ground floor of Macau Cultural Centre (CCM) from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. from Mondays to Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
