The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement yesterday that it captured 568 stray dogs across the city last year, an increase of 50 percent from 2023.
The statement underlined that the bureau has been placing strong emphasis on addressing the problem of stray animals “at the root” where IAM inspectors conduct patrols every day in areas where stray dogs are frequently spotted such as Coloane’s Concórdia Industrial Park, an area near Seac Pai Van public housing community, Coloane Village, Ka Ho Reservoir, and Hac Sa Reservoir.
Through regular inspections and trapping operations at locations where stray animals are frequently spotted, the statement said, 568 stray dogs were captured in 2024, an increase of 50 percent from 2023.
The statement also underlined that in recent years, the bureau has also actively collaborated with animal protection organisations to promote its TNA programme, referring to trap-neuter-adoption, aiming to reduce the stray animal population through capture, sterilisation and adoption efforts.
Yesterday’s IAM statement came after a 61-year-old local woman was bitten by a dog near Concórdia Industrial Park yesterday morning. She was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment of her wounds.
The statement did not say how many of the captured stray dogs were euthanised.
