The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) released its spring weather forecast on Friday, which predicts that the average temperature for March to May in Macau will be normal to high, and the cumulative rainfall will be normal to low, with the normal climate range for spring temperatures in Macau from 21.9°C to 22.6°C and rainfall ranging from 380 to 640 millimetres.

According to the local observatory, at the beginning of the spring season, Macau will be mainly affected by an easterly airflow after the surface cold high pressure comes out of the sea, adding that humid cloudy, rainy weather will often occur.

Afterwards, the cold high pressure will gradually weaken, the temperature will gradually pick up, and South China will be under the control of a trough of low pressure, while the precipitation activity will increase at the end of the spring season, i.e., starting from May, accompanied by thunderstorms, the observatory forecasts.

The bureau also said that the sea surface temperature in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean has been declining and is in a ‘La Niña’ state, adding that based on the combined model forecasts, it is predicted that the ‘La Niña’ state will gradually ease and there is a chance that it will return to the ‘ENSO-neutral’* state by the end of spring.

According to Wikipedia, La Niña (“The Girl” in Spanish) is a complex weather pattern that occurs every few years, as a result of variations in ocean temperatures in the equatorial band of the Pacific Ocean. The phenomenon occurs as strong winds blow warm water at the ocean’s surface away from South America, across the Pacific Ocean towards Indonesia.

In addition, the observatory issued a special weather bulletin yesterday saying a cold front was expected to arrive at the Guangdong coast late tonight and early tomorrow, with sudden showers and possible thunderstorms.

Therefore, under the influence of a northeasterly monsoon, the temperature in Macau will drop and the northerly winds will intensify, with the temperature in Macau dropping to 13°C on Friday and Saturday, the observatory forecast.

* ENSO-neutral refers to a state in which there is neither an El Niño nor a La Niña event occurring in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. ENSO stands for El Niño-Southern Oscillation, a climate phenomenon that involves fluctuations in sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and atmospheric pressure in the tropical Pacific.
