A man from the mainland was arrested on Saturday for engaging in an illegal currency exchange deal, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Kim Fong said during a regular press conference yesterday.
The 29-year-old suspect surnamed Gan told the police that he is jobless.
According to Cheong, the police received a report about an illegal currency exchange activity from a casino in Cotai on Saturday. Gan approached a male gambler in a smoking lounge of the casino and offered a currency exchange deal. The gambler showed interest in the deal and agreed to exchange 14,400 yuan for chips worth HK$15,000. The gambler then scanned the QR code provided by Gan and transferred 14,400 yuan to him. The police apprehended Gan and the male gambler on the spot. The gambler then turned witness in the case.
Under questioning, Gan told the police that he had made a profit of HK$375 from the deal. The police seized HK$77,000 in chips from Gan.
Gan has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an illegal currency exchange charge, according to Cheong.
