Hospitals’ inpatients rise 3.9 pct to 62,000 last year

Macau’s five hospitals provided a total of 1,628 in-patient beds last year, up by 24 year-on-year, while their number of inpatients rose 3.9 percent to 62,000, with the average hospital stay up by 0.2 day to 7.4 days, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced yesterday.

The occupancy rate of in-patient beds grew 3.9 percentage points to 78.3 percent.

Outpatient attendance rose 5.8 percent to 1.89 million, of which consultations in Internal Medicine (312,000) accounted for 16.5 percent, followed by those in Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation (252,000), which took up 13.3 percent.

Emergency attendances rose 5.2 percent to 489,000, with those in the Macau Peninsula (383,000) and Taipa (107,000) increasing by 5.9 percent and 3.0 percent respectively.

There were about 20,000 surgical operations last year, up by 6.3 percent year-on-year. Surgical operations in Ophthalmology (3,997) rose 40.4 percent, representing a growth of over 40 percent for two consecutive years.

Macau had 716 primary health care establishments such as public health centres and private clinics last year. The total number of consultations increased 4.5 percent to 4.4 million, of which consultations in government health establishments grew 4.7 percent to 939,000 and consultations in private clinics increased 4.4 percent to 3.17 million.

Consultations in General Practice (1.2 million) accounted for 29.8 percent of the total, followed by those in Traditional Chinese Medicine (1.14 million) and Stomatology/Odontology (277,000), accounting for 27.8 percent and 6.7 percent respectively.

A total of 416,000 doses of vaccine were administered in hospitals and primary health care establishments last year, up by 9.5 percent. Flu shots totalled 161,000 doses.

The number of blood donations rose by 3.9 percent to 15,441, with 3,369 first-time blood donations. A total of 11,150 people donated blood last year, a year-on-year increase of 3.6 percent.

According to data provided by the Health Bureau (SSM), there were 1,808 doctors and 2,491 nurses in Macau last year, up by 3.1 percent and 1.1 percent respectively year-on-year. The number of doctors and nurses per 1,000 population was 2.7 and 3.7 respectively.

At the end of the first quarter, Macau’s population stood at 696,100, according to DSEC data.
