The Macau Polytechnic Institute (IPM) and University of Porto have co-launched the first Portuguese international journal in Asia, named “Orientes do Português”, according to an IPM statement yesterday.

According to the statement, the publication aims to highlight the advantages of Macau as a platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs) and promote the academic status of Macau for Portuguese education, as well as strengthening the development of Portuguese learning on the mainland.

The statement pointed out that the University of Porto and IPM have been jointly developing several cooperation projects in the area of Portuguese language teaching and studies, adding that their research outcomes in Asia have “steadily increased” so that their cooperation is becoming increasingly influential in the respective international academic fields.

Since most of the Portuguese-language journals are based in Portugal and Brazil, and there was no academic journal in Portuguese in Asia, the two institutions aimed to “fill the gap” by launching the journal, the statement said.

The “Orientes do Português” aims to become a platform for high quality academic exchanges for Portuguese-speaking scholars in Asia to present their academic achievements, the statement noted.

The “Orientes do Português” strictly follows the criteria of evaluation by the most prestigious international journals. It is open to submissions in research areas of Portuguese linguistics, Portuguese and Asian languages, the teaching and learning of Portuguese as a non-native language, translation studies, literary and cultural studies of PSCs, as well as the cultural, literary and artistic manifestations of the regions influenced by the Portuguese language, the statement noted.

The journal is published annually, and has an ISSN reference of 2707-3122 for the paper version and digital e-ISSN reference of 2707-3130, the statement noted.

The first volume of “Orientes do Português” was published in December last year, and its second volume is open for submission until July 17, the statement said.
