The newly established Macau People with Disabilities Federation wants Macau to get a law on the rights of people with physical or mental disabilities, Albert Cheong Chi Pong, who heads the group, said before meeting Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam Chon Weng yesterday. 

Speaking to reporters outside Government Headquarters, Cheong, visually impaired himself, said disabled people have “great difficulties” when using the city’s public facilities, adding that officials always viewed the situation from an able-bodied person’s perspective. 

He also said the government should subsidise a social service organisation to operate an assistive technology resources centre where people with disabilities could buy, rent and borrow the devices such as rice cookers with voice commands and stair-climbing wheelchairs.
