The public Ka Ho Rehabilitation Hospital in Coloane came into operation yesterday, providing up to 188 beds primarily for senior citizens receiving rehabilitation or palliative treatment.

Accompanied by Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam Chon Weng, Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On yesterday inaugurated the hospital, which is jointly run by the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre and the Macau Federation of Trade Unions (commonly known as Gung Luen). The beds run by the trade union are for rehabilitation treatment while the beds run by the public hospital are for palliative treatment.

The hospital is located near the oil depot in Ka Ho on the north-eastern shore of Coloane.

The construction of the hospital started in July 2015 and was completed in May last year. The hospital construction cost 260 million patacas, according to the government.

Speaking to reporters while inspecting the then almost completed hospital project in June last year, Tam said that the hospital’s underground sewer pipes were yet to be finished. He said at that time that the rehabilitation hospital could start operating after the sewer pipe project was completed.

Delivering a speech during yesterday’s inauguration ceremony, Tam said that the city’s latest hospital comprises three sections: 1) a physiotherapy area run by the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre; 2) rehabilitation wards also run by the public hospital; and 3) rehabilitation wards run by the Macau Federation of Trade Unions.

According to Tam, the hospital has a total of 188 beds – 88 beds in the public hospital-run rehabilitation wards and 100 beds in the rehabilitation wards run by the city’s main trade union.

According to Tam, the health services provided by the Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre include clinical treatment, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pain management, and psychological counselling, among others.
