8 Iranians arrested for using fake passports

Eight Iranians were arrested on Sunday for entering Macau with fake passports with the intention of flying to Europe from Macau to seek jobs, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Choi Iok Kin said at a regular press conference yesterday.

The six men and two women, aged 20 to 40, were arrested on Sunday when an immigration officer at the local airport checked one of the Iranian’s passports after the eight had arrived on a flight from Kuala Lumpur. The bar code reader could not read the passenger’s e-passport and the hologram in the passport aroused suspicion so the officer suspected that the passenger was travelling on a counterfeit passport, Choi said.

After further investigation the police discovered that eight people on the same flight were suspected of using forged passports including those from Austria, Denmark, Italy and Spain, and when searching the passengers’ hand luggage found their genuine Iranian passports.

This undated handout photo released by the Public Security Police (PSP) yesterday shows the fake passports and mobile phones seized from the Iranian suspects.
