Local boxing hopeful Cheong Lap Cheong won his first belt at the first attempt in the dying seconds of the first round of an eight-round bout at Wynn Palace in Cotai yesterday afternoon and got his wish to start the New Year on a high.

Macao Boxing House’s Cheong, 22, was the first fight up on the “Lifetime Boxing Fight 1” card at Wynn Palace Grand Theatre yesterday afternoon in a boxing fest co-sponsored by Macao Boxing House, Hong Kong’s DEF Promotions, Tokyo Broadcasting System TV (TBS) and Japan’s Watanabe Boxing Hall.

Cheong (now 5-0-0 4KOs) was fighting 23-year-old Hans Raj Thakur (now 4-1-0 1KO) of India for the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) Youth Flyweight Belt in the first bout of a six-bout fight card that comprised pugilists from Macau, Hong Kong, mainland China, India, Japan, the Philippines, South Africa and Thailand with five belts up for grabs.
