CEM works on upgrading facilities against natural disasters

CEM is working with the Beijing-based National Committee for Disaster Reduction, the local Office for the Development of the Energy Sector (GDSE) and other local government bodies to develop various improvement measures to cope with possible power outages caused by severe weather events in the future, CEM Generation Department Senior Manager Edmond Etchri said yesterday.

Etchri made the remarks during a lunch with the media at Clube Militar.

Last August, Super Typhoon Hato battered the city resulting in 10 fatalities and 244 injured people. Many of CEM’s power supply facilities were badly damaged by the floods in low-lying areas, resulting in a massive blackout in the city. Many residents living in the Inner Harbour area did not have electricity in their buildings for days due to the flood-induced damage to power supply facilities.
