Govt urges public to avoid beaches over ‘black substance’

The Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) urged the public yesterday not to go to the city’s two beaches as a “black substance” had been found there.

According to a DSAMA statement, the “black substance” arrived with the tide and was spotted on the sand at Hac Sa Beach on Sunday and Cheoc Van Beach yesterday, adding that Macau Waste System Company (CSR) staff were still cleaning up the beaches yesterday. A notice was also put up at the two beaches in Coloane advising beachgoers to stay off the sand.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) and the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) have inspected the beaches and taken samples of the substance from both beaches, according to the statement.

The statement did not elaborate on the “black substance” found on the two beaches.

This undated handout photo provided by the Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) yesterday shows a sign urging the public not to go on Hac Sa Beach and a Macau Waste System Company (CSR) team removing an unidentified “black substance” from the beach.
