The winning small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) at the first Deignan Award for Responsible Entrepreneurship were unveiled during a prize-giving ceremony on Saturday at The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s (CUHK) Yasumoto International Academic Park, the organisers said in a statement yesterday.

The award is named in honour of Alfred Deignan, who devoted his life to education and social service.

The Gold Award winners, the statement noted, were GoGoChart Technology Limited and MSS Recruitment Limited. The recipients of the Silver and Bronze Awards among the Hong Kong region were awarded to Sunta Chemical Limited and Farmacy HK Limited respectively.

In Macau, C&C Lawyers & Notaries and Macao Newland Technology Co. Ltd received the Silver and Bronze Award respectively.

The winners were evaluated on criteria such as “upholding human dignity” and “displaying exceptional entrepreneurial spirit”, according to the statement, adding that the award celebrates the winners’ outstanding achievements and “stresses the significance of follow-up efforts to ensure that awardees uphold the principles of responsible entrepreneurship for the following years”.

The statement quoted the award’s Steering Committee Chairman and Macau Ricci Institute Director Stephan Rothlin S.J. as saying that the award is “an inspiring platform to showcase the powerful impact of sound values, capable of lighting up a path and making a difference in even the most challenging and competitive marketplaces.”

Moreover, in his speech, steering committee Vice-Chairman and Wofoo Social Enterprises President Joseph Lee (李宗德) underlined the vital role of purpose and mission in the growth and sustainability of enterprises, emphasising that a good purpose is key to a thriving society.

Moreover, the award’s chief judge, Ruby O (柯學明), was quoted in the statement as saying: “It’s heartening to see that an increasing number of businesses have begun to recognise the significance of ethical business practices in recent years.”
