The driver of a car that killed a motorcycle rider in a crash in Taipa on Wednesday night last week faces a possible charge of negligent homicide, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheong Heon Fan announced during a regular press conference on Friday.

Cheong announced further details about the fatal accident during Friday’s press conference.

Cheong identified the car driver as a 28-year-old man.

According to Cheong, the accident occurred at around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday on Rotunda do Estádio, the roundabout near Macau Stadium.

After crashing with the motorcycle, the car rammed into a green road barrier on the roundabout, and only stopped after ramming into a lamp post, Cheong said.

The motorcycle rider and pillion, both males, were rushed to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for emergency treatment. However, the 21-year-old rider later died in the hospital after treatment to save his life had failed.

According to Cheong, the 22-year-old pillion rider had been discharged from the hospital before Friday’s press conference.

The car had a male passenger when the accident occurred. According to Cheong, the car driver, who sustained slight injuries, declined to be taken to hospital for treatment. He passed a breathalyser test.

The car passenger was not injured.

Cheong said that based on their investigation into the accident the police decided to transfer the car driver to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) where he faces possible charges of negligent homicide and causing bodily harm by negligence.

However, Cheong said that the police were still investigating whether the car driver was speeding or committing other traffic offences before and when the accident occurred.
