A local man was arrested for separately giving three cheques that bounced to a business partner, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said in a regular conference yesterday.

The 38-year-old suspect surnamed Ao owns a technology company. Ao and the victim, who also owns a technology company, together bid for and won a monitoring project of a local university in May. Chan said that they both invested 3.2 million patacas in the project.

According to Chan, Ao received the first payment from the university on September 20 and issued a cheque of 1,157,250 patacas to the victim as promised, but when the victim went to the bank to cash it later, it bounced due to insufficient funds in the account.

Chan said that Ao subsequently gave the victim two more cheques of 1.1 million and 1.115 million respectively in October, but they also bounced, after which the victim reported the case to the police.

Under questioning, Ao admitted the crime and claimed that he used the money for his business instead.

Ao was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Friday, facing a fraud charge – issuance of a cheque without sufficient funds, Chan said.
