Macau's observatory hoisted Typhoon Signal No.8 at 9:30 p.m.

The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement that the warning signal will remain in effect at least until early tomorrow morning.

At 9 p.m. Severe Tropical Cycle "Chaba" was located about 330 km south-southwest of Macau, moving toward the western coast of Guangdong province.

According to the weather station's classification of storm warning signals, Typhoon Signal No.8 means that a tropical cyclone continues to approach Macao. Winds with a sustained speed of 63 to 117 km/h is expected or blowing and the gusts may exceed 180 km/h in Macau. 

The observatory urged people in Macau to suspend all outdoor and marine activities. 

Meanwhile, the observatory issued at 8 p.m. a yellow storm surge warning. It forecast that flooding will occur in low-lying areas tomorrow between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. 

Flooding is forecast to reach its highest level between 9 a.m. and noon tomorrow. 

The highest flooding level is expected to be about 0.50 metre to 1.0 metre. 

Yellow indicates the second-highest level on a five-level storm surge warning scale. 

At 9:45 p.m., the temperature in Macau stood at 27 degrees Celsius, while relative humidity amounted to 87 %.
