The University of Macau (UM) announced in a statement yesterday that 356 of its students received scholarships and academic prizes for “their outstanding academic performance” during the Scholarship Presentation Ceremony 2021.

According to the statement, donations were received from over 50 institutions and individuals, with the students receiving scholarships worth more than 3.4 million patacas in total. The statement added that during yesterday’s on-campus ceremony, a number of scholarships from various entities were presented such as the Macau Foundation (FM) Scholarship, Bank of China (BOC) Scholarship, Sands China Ltd. Scholarship, BCMbank Scholarship, The Golden Burger (Macau) Charity Association Scholarship, and the Macau Water Scholarship. The statement said that UM’s Acting Rector Michael Hui King Man congratulated the awardees on their scholarship and prizes and expressed his gratitude to the donors.

Moreover, the statement quoted Hui as pointing out that the university has been taking part in the “development of the nation, the Greater Bay Area [GBA] and Macau”. The statement also underlined a number of projects that the public university has been involved in, such as receiving approval from the Ministry of Science and Technology to create the first “state key laboratory of Internet of Things for smart cities in China” and building its first industry-academia base in the Greater Bay Area via the Zhuhai UM Science and Technology Research Institute.

Aiming to provide “precision medicine treatment for cancer patients in Macau, the GBA, and elsewhere in mainland China, and to facilitate the development of Macau into a centre of tourism, the statement noted that UM received permission from the central government to create the Frontiers Science Centre for Precision Oncology in January of this year.

The statement noted that the university provided more than 70 scholarships and academic prizes in the past year to motivate students to do their best in their studies, adding that during the 2020/2021 academic year, UM received a total of over four million patacas in academic prizes and scholarships from more than 50 institutions and individuals. The statement pointed out that academic prizes and scholarships were awarded to more than 400 students at the university’s major events.
