A woman was cheated out of NT$51,000 (14,600 patacas) in an online scam last week, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said at a press briefing on Monday.

According to Ho, the victim reported the case to the Judiciary Police on Friday. She told the police that she saw an advertisement in her chat group she has joined, on that day. The advertisement offered game tokens and virtual gift promotions. The victim added a contact in her LINE account followed by a customer service contact for purchasing gift cards.

Ho said the victim followed the purported customer service instructions to purchase a NT$1,000 GASH gift card and provided her password. Afterwards, she did not receive any tokens or virtual gifts and contacted the “customer service staff” who told her that the discount package had already expired, asking her to buy more gift cards. The victim later purchased more gift cards totalling NT$51,000 but she was still unable to receive anything. The victim finally realised that she had been cheated and reported the loss of 14,600 patacas to the police.

The Judiciary Police are following up on the case, and no-one had been arrested at the time of the press conference, according to Ho.
