Consumer price index falls 0.51 pct in May

Macau's composite consumer price index (CPI) fell 0.51 percent year-on-year last month, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

Macau has been affected by negative inflation since September last year. Macau has been affected by the impact of the COVID-19 since early last year.

A DSEC statement yesterday attributed May's composite CPI decline to falling pork prices and lower charges for package tours and telecommunication services. However, the decrease was partially offset by higher airfares and higher prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and fruit, rising charges for electricity and eating-out, and domestic helpers' rising wages.

Last month's composite CPI rose 0.04 percent month-on-month. The average composite CPI for the first five months of this year dropped 0.85 percent year-on-year.
