An art event entitled “A Miniature Pottery Exhibition” (微。器物) hosted by local ceramist Sandy Tong Sin I (董倩怡) and organised by Tong and her company will be held over two weekends this month at SI Coffee in Coloane Village.

Tong was born in Macau in 1992. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in Design (Communication Design) from Melbourne’s Swinburne University of Technology in 2014. She enrolled in ceramics courses in Hungary in 2019 and Guangzhou in 2020. She currently works as a graphic designer, according to a statement by Tong.

In the statement sent to The Macau Post Daily last week, Tong underlined that she loves to feel nature and to create artworks inspired by the “organic forms” of the natural environment.

“Soil is accumulated to become sedimentary rock, like each one’s life is a unique one. Organic forms are changeable but do not replicate, they are unique like our life experience”, she pointed out.

Tong noted that ceramic art has gradually become popular in Macau in recent years. Tong said she hoped that the visitors to her exhibition will be able to see a new perspective of ceramic art.

It’s her first solo exhibition of ceramic art.

This exhibition aims to introduce visitors to her miniature pottery and also to enable them to explore her inner concentration and patience to detail. Each miniature pottery is only about one centimetre to three centimetres long.

Due to the artworks’ tiny size, Tong emphasised, she can only create them with her fingertips and therefore needs to pay very close attention to every single detail, according to Tong’s statement.

Tong also said that magnifiers will be available at the venue to allow visitors to look at the details in every single tiny pottery. Besides, dried petite flowers will be provided to visitors so that they can place the flowers into the minute pottery.

The exhibition will be held over two weekends, from June 18 to 20 and from June 25 to 27 (Friday to Sunday) at SI Coffee at 7 Rua dos Negociantes in Coloane Village. The coffee shop opens from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
