Art lovers and other members of the public can immerse themselves in art in a large-scale exhibition at Sands Macao that celebrates the platinum jubilee of one of the city’s oldest and largest art organisations: the Macau Artist Society (MAS).
Located at the casino-hotel’s Level 4 ballroom, the free-admission “Art in the New Era – The 70th Anniversary Invitational Exhibition of the Macau Artist Society”* presents a variety of artworks. Upon entering, exhibitiongoers are immediately met by works such as “Ascending” by MAS President Lok Hei and “A century of storms” by watercolour master Lio Man Cheong, along with other artworks of various disciplines such as calligraphy.
Exploring the venue further, one will find oneself surrounded by works created through a variety of mediums ranging from watercolours and oils to Chinese ink paintings that depict various scenes. One can also find mixed media pieces, alongside statues and sculptures. The total number of works on display number at close to 200, or 198 art pieces to be exact, highlighting a variety of themes.
The exhibiting artists not only include those who are from Macau, but also those invited from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, China’s Taiwan region, France, Japan, South Korea and the US. In all, the showcase gathers “diverse perspectives and showcases the vibrant vitality of contemporary art”, according to an MAS statement on Saturday.
The association was founded in 1956, with senior artists Lok Cheong, Kuan Man Lei, and Tam Chi Sang bringing together art enthusiasts to establish it, according to a welcome message by Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) President Deland Leong Wai Man displayed at the venue.
“The flourishing development of Macau’s cultural sector would not be possible without the perseverance and concerted efforts of civil art organisations. As one of the oldest and most representative art associations in Macau, the Macau Artist Society has always advanced in step with the cultural development of the Macao SAR”, Leong said.
Leong added: “It is our hope that the Society [MAS] will remain true to its founding mission, continue to cultivate artistic creation and arts education, produce more works that embody both the spirit of the times and distinctive Macau characteristics, nurture young artistic, and actively contribute to the building of a Cultural Macau”.
Members of the public can continue to visit the ongoing event until September 15, being open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
