The Macao Populace Mental Health Promotion Association (MPMHPA), in collaboration with the Alliance for Common People Building Up Macau (API), held a screening session for the micro-film “Facing Light” yesterday, with the aim of delivering information about mental illness to the public and eliminating societal misunderstandings.
The micro-film “Facing Light” is produced by the Macao Populace Mental Health Promotion Association. It depicts the community issues faced by people recovering from mental illness and their families. The screening took place at API headquarters in Areia Preta, attracting over 150 participants.
MPMHPA Chairman Lo Io Chou told reporters on the sidelines of the screening that while traditional misconceptions previously fuelled stigma surrounding mental illness, public friendliness toward individuals with mental health conditions has continued to improve in recent years, adding that the micro-film aims to enhance public understanding, reduce prejudice, and help build an inclusive society.
Meanwhile, local psychiatric outpatient visits have kept rising in recent years. Lo attributed this increase to heightened public awareness of psychological well-being, driven by promotional efforts from relevant government entities and local rehabilitation organisations advocating early treatment, adding that consequently, individuals who previously hesitated to seek psychiatric therapy are now more willing to do so voluntarily.
With the rapid development of social media and online gaming, youngsters facing academic or relational difficulties often struggle emotionally, making them more vulnerable to psychological and mental health issues. Lo suggested long-term collaborations between social service agencies and schools to promote mental health education and prevention concepts.
Lo pointed out that as Macau undergoes appropriate economic diversification, vacant commercial properties, closures of long-standing businesses, and rising unemployment have adversely affected the mental well-being of affected residents. He urged the government and local organisations to host more positive community events, such as carnivals and inspirational theatrical performances, to spread optimism and promote mental health literacy across neighbourhoods.
